Fire Training for Skanska

Skanska is one of the world’s leading project development and construction companies, employing around 57,000 people globally and over 5,000 people in the UK.

Skanska specialises in public private partnerships, civil engineering, utilities and building services. With a base in Hertfordshire, Skanska has eight operating units responsible for different sectors and has offices across the UK.

Due to the diversity of its operations, Skanska wanted a fire training provider who could respond to a wide variety of specific fire safety challenges. The company has developed famous projects including the Gherkin building in London, the QE II Bridge and infrastructure for the 2012 Olympics in London. It is currently involved in a joint venture project with Costain to develop the Crossrail Paddington Station.

The fire safety challenges on such diverse projects require a high level of tailoring and close liaison with the Safety and Training departments within Skanska. UK Fire Training have provided a service which has continuously met the need for training which is relevant for site staff in the most demanding of situations. Due to the nature of fast moving projects, the training often need to book courses at short notice and some courses need to be carried out at unsociable hours. UK Fire Training are able to meet these needs due to highly flexible customer service and a responsive national network of trainers.

The nature of Skanska’s work dictates that training be focussed on the unique range of hazards on projects that include tunnels, bridges and prisons.

UK Fire Training developed a highly bespoke Hotworks Supervisors package for key sites including Crossrail. This was based around Skanska’s in-house operating procedures and reflected the construction activities that gave rise to fire hazards. This course was a success and has now been rolled out to other projects.
